Anthony Eugene “Tony” Harris, 75, of Portsmouth, passed away on Monday, April 8, 2024, at the SOMC Hospice Center in Portsmouth. A son of the late Avanell Craddolph Mattison and Clarence Vincent Harris, he was born on November 30, 1948, in Oak Hill.
A 1966 Portsmouth High School graduate, Tony was a Vietnam-era veteran of the U.S. Army. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and a Rifle Expert commendation for his service.
He retired after more than 30 years with Columbia Gas and he was a member of Living Faith Temple. Tony was an avid fisherman and outdoorsman and he had a love for animals. He was also a good cook and enjoyed spending time with his family or reading.
Surviving is his daughter, Maja Antoinette Harris - Kennedy of Portsmouth; two brothers, Walter Daniel Harris of Columbus and Alex Ryan Harris of Portsmouth; sister, Marion L. “Tootie” (Jack) Hostetler of Frankfort; former wife and mother of his children, Marcia Harris of Portsmouth; stepbrother, Clark Thompson of Indianapolis, IN; son-in-love, Vincent Kennedy, Jr. of Portsmouth; four grandchildren, Dasia Kennedy, Vincent Kennedy III, Ahmad Harris and Antonio Harris; two great-grandchildren, London Ahani and Amir Anthony; and many nieces, nephews and their families.
In addition to his parents, Tony was preceded in death by his son, Anthony Eugene Harris II; stepfather, Marion L. “Rocky” Mattison; brother, Gerald L. “Jerry” Harris; and a stepsister, Princess Carter.
Funeral services will be held at 1 P.M. on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at the Ralph F. Scott Funeral Home in Portsmouth with Bishop Marcus Bendolph officiating. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 11 A.M until the service hour.
The James Dickey Post #23 American Legion Honor Guard will provide military rites. Interment will be in Blackfork Cemetery at a later date.
In honor of Mr. Harris’s service to our country, the flag of the U.S. Army will fly at the funeral home.
